What this directory is

The Scally Cap Directory is a hand-built reference to the workshops, milliners and heritage brands still making the eight-panel scally cap and its relatives — the newsboy, the ivy, the driver and the flat cap. It exists because the alternative, for most people, is a search results page full of drop-shipped caps with no maker behind them.

It is not a shop, a marketplace or an affiliate storefront dressed up as a guide. Nothing is bought or sold here.

How a maker gets listed

Every entry is added by hand after we read the maker’s own site end to end. We look for four things: evidence that caps are actually produced rather than resold under a label; named cloths or named mills, which is usually the fastest tell of a serious workshop; a coherent size range with a published measuring guide; and a working, honest order and returns page.

A maker who fails on production evidence does not get in at all. Failing on the other three is a caveat we write about rather than a disqualification — a superb small workshop with an awkward checkout is still a superb small workshop.

We do not list generic marketplace sellers, print-on-demand shops, or brands whose entire catalogue can be found under a different name on a wholesale site.

How write-ups are produced

Each maker page is written from the maker’s published material — their product descriptions, their cloth sourcing, their sizing chart and their own account of their history — combined with general knowledge of how caps in this category are constructed and how they behave in wear.

Where a claim comes from a maker rather than from us, we say so. Where we are uncertain, we hedge rather than assert. We do not publish invented founding dates, invented prices, invented awards or invented customer quotes. There are no star ratings on this site, because a single number across cloth, construction, fit and service hides more than it explains.

Every maker entry includes at least one honest caveat. A directory in which nothing is ever a bad fit for anyone is a catalogue.

What “Featured” means

Featured Makers is an editorial selection, chosen for how well a workshop represents its corner of the category — a specific cloth, a specific regional tradition, a specific price bracket. It is not for sale, it has never been for sale, and if that ever changes the section will be relabelled as sponsored and clearly marked.

How the site makes money

Two ways, both disclosed. First, third-party display advertising, served programmatically; we do not choose the advertisers and their adverts have no bearing on the editorial. Second, some outbound links may be affiliate links, meaning a commission if you buy.

Affiliate status is never a condition of being listed, never affects what we write, and never changes the order in which makers appear. Plenty of makers here have no affiliate programme at all, which is precisely why the list is worth reading.

Corrections

Mistakes get fixed. If a maker has closed, changed hands, moved production, or been described inaccurately, email us and we will correct or remove the entry. Substantive corrections are made directly on the page rather than quietly deleted.

We will not remove a fair, accurate write-up because a brand dislikes a caveat in it.

Use of AI

Drafting and editing tools are used in producing this site, as they are at most modern publications. Every maker entry, guide and glossary definition is reviewed by a person before publication, and we are responsible for everything published here. Report anything that reads as wrong and it will be checked.
